A little bit of history

The Province of Imperia has an ancient and interesting history. In the past, the territory was part of the Province of Nice, and with the Treaty of Turin (1860), most of the region was ceded to France. In 1923, the Province of Porto Maurizio was renamed the Province of Imperia.

During World War II, French troops tried to annex part of the territory but were forced to withdraw thanks to the order of Harry Truman, President of the United States.

The Province of Imperia has an official coat of arms approved in 1927. In addition, the province was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor for its sacrifices and activity in the partisan struggle during World War II.

Society in the province

Foreign citizens resident in the Province of Imperia constitute about 10.66% of the provincial population. The city with the highest number of foreign residents is Sanremo, and Montegrosso Pian Latte is the only municipality without foreign presence.

The prevalent religion in the Province of Imperia is Catholicism, and the region is divided among the Dioceses of Albenga-Imperia and Ventimiglia-San Remo.

Culture

The Province of Imperia is famous for its art cities and natural beauty. Among the most important art cities are Ventimiglia, Sanremo, and Imperia. The latter hosts the Basilica of San Maurizio, the largest church in Liguria. Ventimiglia, on the other hand, is famous for its Hanbury Botanical Gardens, and Sanremo for the famous Sanremo Casino in Liberty style and the Russian Church.
