History

Cervino has an ancient and fascinating history that connects it to the surrounding lands. Its founding is said to have been the work of some loggers, originally from the Talanico fraction of Santa Maria a Vico. The name of the town derives from an ancient cult to the Greek-Roman goddess Artemis-Diana and the presence of ruins of a temple dedicated to her. The goddess was considered the queen of hunting and forests, and her favorite animal was the deer, from which the name "Cervino" comes.

The land on which Cervino stands was part of a larger territory where Suessola was located, an ancient city of the Osci. Suessola was destroyed by the Saracens without hope of recovery. The flat part of the territory, located near Cervino, was annexed to the diocese of Acerra while the mountainous part was attributed to the diocese of Sant'Agata dei Goti. Later, the territory was finally attributed to the diocese of Caserta.

The nucleus of the town of Cervino was formed between 970 and 1113 and owes its origin to a small group of charcoal burners from Talanico, in search of work and bread. In 970, the archbishop of Benevento, Landulfo, circumscribed the diocese of Sant'Agata dei Goti to Bishop Madelfrido, referring to the important Mount Magdaluni that served as a border. In 1113, the Archbishop of Capua, Senne, described the diocese of Caserta to Bishop Rainulfo listing the 25 churches present in the territory of Maddaloni.

Conclusions

Cervino is a small town with a great history behind it. Its name derives from an ancient cult to the Greek-Roman goddess Artemis-Diana and the territory on which it stands has been the scene of important events. The town is rich in fruit trees and mountain landscapes. Visiting Cervino means immersing oneself in a reality that has preserved part of its antiquity, without losing sight of the future.
