Welcome to Cervinara: a brief introduction

Hi everyone! Today I will talk to you about Cervinara, a beautiful municipality in the province of Avellino, Campania. With its 8759 inhabitants, Cervinara is a small gem worth visiting. The town has a millenary history and a wealth of cultural heritage that make it an unmissable destination for anyone who wants to discover the beauty of Italy. In this article, I will guide you to discover some of its historical and artistic wonders.

History

Like many Italian cities, Cervinara also has an ancient history. It is said that the name "Cervinara" derives from the cult of Ceres, the goddess of harvests, to whom the Romans would have dedicated an altar. However, the first documented news of the town dates back to 837 when the monks of San Vincenzo al Volturno donated the castrum of Cerbinaria to the Beneventan prince Sicardo. In the following centuries, Cervinara knew many feudal lords. During the nineteenth century, it experienced a strong agricultural development, thanks to the fertility of the soil. In 1820 and 1848, the town participated in the liberal revolts, but most of the population remained neutral or sided with the Bourbons.

The period of brigandage

Following the unification of Italy and the arrival of the Piedmontese in Naples, Cervinara rebelled against the government. This led to the period of brigandage, a partisan war that saw the bands of Cipriano and Giona La Gala as protagonists. The brigands chose the mountains overlooking the town as their battlefield. The period of brigandage lasted several years and inflamed the region.

The flood of 1999

On December 16, 1999, a muddy landslide struck the Ioffredo and Castello fractions, causing the death of five people and the destruction or damage of numerous buildings. This tragic flood is still vividly remembered by the citizens of Cervinara.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are passionate about art and architecture, Cervinara is the right place for you! The town offers many monuments and places of interest. Among the religious ones, do not miss the abbey of San Gennaro in the Ferrari fraction or the church of San Nicola in Ioffredo-Castello. But they are not the only ones, there are several churches and chapels scattered throughout the various fractions of the town. If you prefer civil architectures, I recommend you admire the Palazzo Marchesale and the Palazzo Finelli in the Salomoni, the Palazzo Marchese, still in the Salomoni, but do not forget the beautiful Palazzo Bizzarro in Pirozza. If you are interested in military architectures, you can see the ruined medieval tower at the top of the Castello fraction.
