The History of Cerva

There are numerous interpretations about the origin of the village, but the most accredited hypothesis states that the foundation of the village dates back to the end of the 18th century, by some settlers from the province of Cosenza. Initially called San Giovanni della Croce, the community was later called Cerva, perhaps due to the presence of an area known for game or frequent sightings of a deer near the village.

Initially, it was part of the fiefdom of the Poerio family of Belcastro, until the abolition of feudalism in the Kingdom of Naples in 1806, except for the period between 1746 and 1758 when it passed to the Maida family of Cutro. The name was changed to Cerva only later, with the establishment of the municipalities in the Kingdom of Naples. The community became part of the municipality of Andali as a hamlet, before being declared an autonomous municipality on October 28, 1850. In the following years, Cerva was recognized as a place and university, by decree of January 19, 1807 during the Napoleonic period of the Kingdom of Naples.

One of the most important historical events to be noted is a popular revolt against the abuses of the local commander of the Carabinieri garrison during World War II.
