Origins of the Name
Cerro al Lambro takes its name from the Quercus cerris plant, an oak tree widespread in central and southern Europe and commonly used for the production of high-quality timber. The ancient vegetation on the Lambro's banks was rich in hornbeams, birches, poplars, walnuts, maples, and oaks. The name of the municipality "cerro" was chosen in honor of this oak tree. The municipality's coat of arms features a golden oak tree on a green field. After Italy's unification, the municipality was named Cerro al Lambro to distinguish it from other municipalities with the same name.
History
Cerro al Lambro has Celtic origins dating back to the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Since ancient times, the town has played an important role, thanks to its strategic location near the Lambro River, which was one of the main connections between Milan, the Po River, and the sea. During the 12th century, the town was involved in the struggles between the Lombard municipalities and the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The emperor camped in Cerro al Lambro with his troops before besieging and destroying Milan. In 1183, after the peace of Constance, the town was placed under the jurisdiction of Lodi and returned under the control of Milan in 1198.
Cerro al Lambro has a long history that has allowed it to be an important center in the Lombardy region. Over time, the municipality has become a small plain town near other cities in Lombardy.
