Cerreto di Spoleto

Welcome to Cerreto di Spoleto!

Cerreto di Spoleto is a small Italian town with a population of 982 residents, located in the province of Perugia, in the charming region of Umbria. The name of the village derives from the nearby Cerro forests and its ancient origins.

History

The first records of Cerreto di Spoleto date back to the Lombard era, when the village was a "castrum" equipped with watchtowers to control the surrounding commercial routes. During the Middle Ages, the village reached the peak of its importance as a strategic center between Norcia and Spoleto, undergoing several invasions. In 1446, the municipality was finally subjected by the State of the Church. During the sixteenth century, many of the watchtowers were demolished and converted into stone quarries.
