Cernusco Lombardone, the cheerful and welcoming small town

Cernusco Lombardone is a small municipality located in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy, with a population of just over 3,500 people. Despite its small size, Cernusco Lombardone is a very welcoming place, where the warmth of the community immediately makes all visitors feel at home.

Territory

The municipality extends over flat and hilly terrain, crossed by two streams, the Molgora and the Curone, which trace two valleys of the same name. About a third of the territory of Cernusco Lombardone is included in the Regional Park of Montevecchia and the Curone Valley.

Climate

The climate of Cernusco Lombardone, of a continental type, manifests itself with cold and snowy winters, while summers are hot and humid.

Neighborhoods

The municipality is divided into six distinct neighborhoods, each with its own distinctive features:

• San Marco - located to the south of the municipality, is characterized by two-story villas and Via degli Alpini, the main street that crosses the neighborhood.

• Villa - located in the center-south of the municipality, owes its name to Villa Lurani Cernuschi, located in the area. The neighborhood is served by numerous public services, including the municipal nursery school and the finance police. Via Monza is the main street.

• Centro - located in the heart of the municipality, is divided into three parts: Alto centro (Enel area), Centro (including the municipality, the oratory, Via Roma, the church of Sant'Ambrogio) and Villa or Bassa Centro. The top two parts make up the current urban center, with numerous services, such as two churches, an oratory, the municipality, and the elementary school. Statale-Via Lecco is the main street.

• San Carlo - located in the northeast part of the municipality, is also known as Oltrestatale. With its numerous population, this area includes numerous streets, and Via Giuseppe Verdi is the most important.

• Oltre Molgora or Oltre stazione - located to the west of the municipality, it is divided into 14 locations, including five hamlets: Paravino, Ronco, Molinazzo, Castello, Cavigiolo. This neighborhood does not have a strong central nucleus like the others, but the church of San Dionigi is certainly one of the most important places in the neighborhood.

• Other areas - the industrial areas present are Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto and Quartiere industriale Regina.

History

Cernusco Lombardone has been inhabited since Roman times, and the via Spluga, one of the most important Roman roads of the time, passed through the municipality, connecting Milan to Lindau.

During the period of the Duchy of Milan, the management of the village passed through various families, such as the Cernuschi, Casa dei Panigarola, and Brivio.

Between 1928 and 1966, Cernusco Lombardone was united with Montevecchia.

Religious architectures

The church of San Giovanni Battista is the mother church of the municipality, dating back to the twelfth century and has been renovated several times over the centuries. In addition, the chapel of Santa Caterina and the church of San Dionigi are worth a visit to appreciate the beauty of the religious architecture of the place.

Civil architectures

Among the remains of the ancient civil structures of the municipality, the castle of Cernusco Lombardone is a symbolically fascinating place. Dating back to the twelfth century, its ruins are still present and give a glimpse of the grandeur of the building of the past.

Cernusco Lombardone is a small town that offers a lot to its visitors. Each neighborhood has its own characteristics, and together, they represent an incredibly welcoming place worth spending time in.
