Discovering Cermignano: an ancient history in the heart of Abruzzo

If you're looking for a place to immerse yourself in the history of Abruzzo, you can't miss Cermignano. This municipality of 1,448 inhabitants, located in the province of Teramo, has a long history that dates back to the 13th century.

The medieval village of Montegualtieri

Cermignano came to life as a fortified settlement that separated from the families of the much older center of Montegualtieri. This tower, known as "Mons" or "Castle of Mons," dates back to the 8th century and was part of the property of the land of San Vincenzo in Volturno and San Giovanni in Venere.

There are no documentary sources that attest to its authorship, the exact date of construction, and the reasons that prompted it, but it is known that it was built during the Kingdom of Sicily, in the second half of the 12th century. At that time, Abruzzo offered the best conditions for the reconstruction of castles and the construction of new towers in conquered areas, with particular attention to the Middle Vomano valley.

Cermignano: history and beauty in the heart of Abruzzo.

The history of Mons

In 799, Mons settlement was already mentioned in the list of assets of San Vincenzo in Volturno. In 968, Emperor Otto confirmed this settlement to Abbot Paolo of San Vincenzo in Volturno. In 1137, Oldrio, abbot of the convent of San Clemente al Vomano, requested the two parts of the Mortula castle from Emperor Lothair, and in 1140, the register of feuds and sub-fiefs still mentioned the tower.

In 1160, Berardo di Scorrano obtained the castles of Monte and Mortula in Penne from Trasmondo di Castelvecchio. In 1176, Pope Alexander III from Anagni confirmed to Abbot Oderisio II of Pagliara di San Giovanni in Venere Monte Gualtiero together with other fiefdoms of the Middle Vomano. In 1195, Emperor Henry VI of Swabia attributed the castle of Monte Gualtiero to Abbot Odorisio.

From the tower to Cermignano

Over the centuries, the Castle of Mons lost its defensive function, and the population began to settle around it. In the 13th century, the village of Cermignano was born, which became an autonomous municipality in 1813.

The economy

Cermignano's economy was closely tied to agriculture, but since World War II, the population began to migrate in different directions, both within and outside the country, abandoning the countryside to seek new opportunities. Furthermore, the construction of the SS80 highway that connects Ascoli Piceno to Teramo no longer passes through the town center, but arrives directly at the base of the hill, with the consequent shift of traffic towards the new artery.

Current situation

Cermignano is now a predominantly residential municipality, but its beauty and strategic position on the Vomano hills attract tourists from all over the world. Furthermore, the proximity to Teramo (only 18 km away) and direct access to the SS80 make Cermignano an ideal base for those looking for a foothold in the region.

Places of interest

Although not very large, Cermignano offers many attractions. The historic center, built around the castle, is a small treasure trove, with its cobbled streets and small squares. The church of San Biagio, built in the 13th century, houses a wooden crucifix attributed to the famous Renaissance sculptor Andrea della Robbia.

Not only churches and medieval architecture, but the surrounding nature of Cermignano is also unique. Monte Camicia, one of the highest peaks of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Adriatic coast, making Cermignano an ideal starting point for those who want to explore the mountain.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a place to enjoy the beauty of Abruzzo, Cermignano is the right choice for you. This charming ancient village offers a wide range of attractions, from history to outdoor activities. Discover Cermignano and let yourself be enchanted by its beauty!
