History
Ceriale is a very ancient place, and the origin of its name is fascinating. Two hypotheses have been put forward to explain its name. The first hypothesis states that the name derives from the names of two consuls of the Roman Empire - Onicius Cerialis and Quinto Petilio Ceriale - who would have carried out their activities in this place. The second supposition refers instead to the flourishing cereal market and the presence of the Roman Temple dedicated to the goddess of agriculture, Ceres, and the related festival, the "Cerialia".
It is interesting to note that in Roman times, a human settlement arose along the Via Julia Augusta, supported by archaeological finds of the time. During the Middle Ages, the territory of Ceriale was subjected to the religious power of the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia, followed by jurisdiction by Albenga who subjugated this area among its possessions "of the Contado". Only in the XIV century, the territory of Ceriale came under the direct control of the Republic of Genoa.
During the Genoese domination, in the marina area, the Torrione was built, a circular bastion that was to serve as a lookout post and, if necessary, as the first line of defense. However, in 1637, the horrific assault of the pirates commanded by the Algerian Ciribì devastated the Cerialese village, destroying also the church of Saints John the Baptist and Eugenio. On that occasion, about three hundred locals were kidnapped and taken to Algeria as slaves, but fortunately, thanks to the "redemption confraternities," the various Cerialese slaves were released. During the French occupation, Ceriale acquired its administrative autonomy from Albenga, returning from December 2, 1797, to the Department of Maremola, with the capital of Pietra Ligure, within the Ligurian Republic.
