Welcome to the beautiful province of Crotone!

Hello everyone and welcome to the province of Crotone, one of the most beautiful and interesting provinces in Calabria. With a population of 160,638 inhabitants, the province covers an area of 1,715 km² and includes numerous municipalities, each with its own history and tradition.

We are located on the magnificent Ionian Sea to the east and border the province of Cosenza to the northwest and the province of Catanzaro to the southwest. Our province was established on March 6, 1992, along with the province of Vibo Valentia, by the division of the territory previously included in the province of Catanzaro. The agency became operational in the spring of 1995, through the Italian local elections of 1995.

A brief history of our province

The creation of the province of Crotone was first proposed in 1957, but the request was not heeded until 1989 when twenty-seven mayors formalized the request. In 1992, the request was finally approved and the province was established.

Crotone has a long and glorious history dating back to the era of Magna Graecia. In the 1920s, it was the first industrial center in Calabria, specializing in the chemical industry with the Montedison and Pertusola Sud settlements. However, industrial production has significantly downsized since 1993 due to environmental pollution.

The physical geography of the province

The province of Crotone extends between the Ionian Sea and the mountains of Sila, offering a great variety of territories and landscapes. Among the most famous tourist destinations in our province are Le Castella (Isola di Capo Rizzuto), where the famous castle of Le Castella is located in the middle of the sea, and Punta Alice (Cirò Marina), which regularly receives the Blue Flag thanks to its clean sea. In addition, Capo Colonna is a recommended cultural destination.

For those who love the mountains, an interesting destination is the town of Trepidò (Cotronei), where the famous Villaggio Palumbo and Villaggio Pino Grande are located, a fraction of Savelli in Sila. In the Sila territory, at the edge of the province of Catanzaro, there are the mountains of Monte Giove, Monte Femminamorta, and part of Monte Gariglione, which are very important for botany and biodiversity. Near these mountains are two typically mountain villages, Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe.

The Arbëreshë community

The Arbëreshë community also resides in the provincial territory, a small Albanian language community located mainly in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto, and Carfizzi. Here the population speaks fluently the Arbëreshë language, an Albanian dialect, and the double validity of Albanian and Italian language is admitted in public offices.

Conclusions

Here is a brief overview of the beautiful province of Crotone. From north to south, from east to west, our province offers a wide range of landscapes, cultures, and traditions. Come and visit us and let yourself be conquered by the beauty and generosity of our land!
