Santa Barbara

Welcome to Santa Barbara: a bit of history and geography

Hello everyone and welcome to Santa Barbara, the largest hamlet in the municipality of Ceraso, in the province of Salerno. This picturesque village has a long history dating back to about a thousand years ago and can also be found with an archaeological excavation carried out in 1985 by the Archaeological Superintendence of Salerno, which unearthed artifacts from the Lucanian-Greek period.

The village is located at the foot of Mount Gelbison and in the center of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. Access to Santa Barbara is possible via the provincial road that runs from Vallo della Lucania to Ascea and Elea-Velia. This city has a district named Isca, located at the confluence of the Bruca and Mandia streams.

The artistic and cultural treasures of Santa Barbara

The historic center of Santa Barbara is composed of three clusters: Capocasale, in the upper part; Piazza Europa, Via Ferolla, Ripa, in the central part; and Piedicasale, in the lower part. The nucleus of via Montesanto (Ddaolato) is probably where the original settlement occurred.

The city is full of buildings of notable historical and architectural interest, including the ancient Ferolla and Ferrara Palaces, dating back to the early eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, respectively. The eighteenth-century Chapel of Madonna del Monte dates back to the first formation of the chapel, which occurred in conjunction with the foundation of the Cenobio. Other artistic and cultural treasures of Santa Barbara include the ancient Romanesque parish church of Sant'Elia Profeta, which unfortunately no longer exists.
