The history of Cerànesi

Cerànesi has an ancient and eventful history. Already in Roman times, the town was important for trade, and the ancient "Cà de Rossi" in the hamlet of San Martino di Paravanico was a caravanserai and a hub for trade between Genoa and the markets of Ovada and Piedmont.

There are many historical testimonies in the city, such as the Church of San Bartolomeo, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the Church of San Lorenzo and the ancient Gaiazza prison. In 1747, the town was devastated by the Austrian army during the War of Austrian Succession.

Cerànesi became an official municipality in 1798 when each hamlet constituted a small autonomous municipality according to the constitutional system of the Republic of Genoa. With the new French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, the municipality was part of the Polcevera department, with Rivarolo as its capital (Genoa), within the Ligurian Republic.
