Discovering the Beauty of Palinuro, Between Myth and History
Hello friends, today I want to take you on a journey to discover Palinuro, a lovely seaside resort located in the province of Salerno, in Campania. This seaside resort, known for the scenic beauty of the Cape Palinuro promontory and its mythology, is the ideal place for beach and cultural tourism, between myth and history.
Physical Geography
Palinuro extends over the small peninsula of the same name and is located at the intersection of State Roads 447, 447r, 562 and 562d. This place is renowned for the beauty of both emerged and underwater caves. Palinuro also boasts a privileged location: it is only 8 kilometers from Marina di Camerota, 10.5 from Pisciotta, 5 from Caprioli and about 100 from Salerno.
The Mediterranean Climate
Palinuro's typical Mediterranean climate ensures pleasant temperatures all year round, so there is no better season to visit Palinuro.
Origins of the Name
Myth
The name Palinuro is linked to a mythological character: the helmsman of Aeneas, the mythological Palinurus, who lost his life due to the god of sleep who lulled him to sleep with sweet words and then threw him into the water. Legend has it that Palinurus swam to the coast, where he was killed by the Eleians. In homage to his friend, Aeneas decided to offer him a worthy burial.
The Eighteenth-century Fountain
Dating back to the eighteenth century, the Fountain of the Eighteenth Century is built on a noble garden in the center of Palinuro and represents an example of rural architecture of considerable value. The monument consists of a rectangular structure with three symmetrical petals on the top and grapevines designed on the pillars. Despite its abandonment, it still retains a characteristic pastel painting.
History
Palinuro was already inhabited in archaic times, as evidenced by a necropolis dating back to the sixth century BC with burials and funeral furnishings. However, there are also legends that indicate human presence in those places already three centuries earlier. Despite the excavations carried out, no elements attributable to the Roman era have been found, although it is true that the commercial and military ships of ancient Rome had the need to dock in these areas.
Conclusions
And here we are, at the end of our story about the beautiful Palinuro. The city is rich in history and legends and is perfect for a really interesting cultural visit. If you are passionate about mythology, the obligatory stop is the visit to the eighteenth-century fountain, dedicated to the mythical helmsman Palinurus. But what about the underwater caves? A boat trip through these treasures of nature is an experience not to be missed.
In any case, Palinuro represents an ideal beach destination, where you can relax in the sun and enjoy the Mediterranean climate all year round.
Until next time, friends!
