Welcome to the province of Arezzo: a brief introduction
Hello everyone! Are you ready to discover the province of Arezzo, a gem of Tuscany that will leave you enchanted? With its 333,572 inhabitants and an area of 3,233.57 square kilometers, it is the fourth largest province in the region. Located in central Italy, it borders Emilia-Romagna, the province of Florence, Marche, and Umbria. But let's talk about its history!
History: from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Italy
The province of Arezzo was established in 1826 from the old Arezzo Compartment of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, which combined municipalities already part of the Firenze Compartment and the Siena Compartment. With annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1860, the municipalities of Cetona, Chianciano Terme, Chiusi, Montepulciano, Sarteano, Sinalunga, and Torrita di Siena passed to the province of Siena, while Monte Santa Maria Tiberina and Monterchi were ceded to the province of Perugia in 1927. However, in 1939 Monterchi returned to being part of the province of Arezzo following protests by the population.
In 2014, the municipalities in the province decreased from 38 to 37 with the creation of the new entity of Pratovecchio Stia from the merger of Pratovecchio and Stia, while in 2018 the new entity of Laterina Pergine Valdarno was established from the merger of Laterina and Pergine Valdarno.
