Lake Cavedine: a jewel in the heart of the Valley of Lakes
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Lake Cavedine, one of the treasures of the wonderful Valley of Lakes, in the province of Trento. This basin is part of the lake system that feeds the hydroelectric power plant of Torbole and extends mainly in the municipality of Cavedine, with some parts of the western and southwest coast belonging to the municipality of Dro.
History: a lake formed by a landslide
The history of Lake Cavedine begins in the first century AD, when a landslide caused by the Monte Brento and Monte Casale mountains blocked the course of the Sarca river and gave life to this splendid basin. This event heavily modified the geography of the area, giving rise to the Marocche di Dro, to the north of the lake. The lake is now connected to the Toblino and Santa Massenza basins through the artificial tributary Rimone.
Environment: a place of great biodiversity
The waters of Lake Cavedine are clear and do not freeze, and host different fish species including Lota lota, Cyprinus carpio, Squalius squalus, Coregonus macrophthalmus, Esox lucius, Perca fluviatilis, Chondrostoma soetta, Scardinius hesperidicus, Tinca tinca and Salmo trutta. The birdlife is also abundant, with the presence of swans, mallards, coots and grey herons.
Tourism: relaxation and sports
Lake Cavedine is an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and unspoiled nature, but also for those who love sports. Despite the water being cooled by the hydroelectric plant, the lake is suitable for swimming and offers the possibility of practicing windsurfing, kayaking and sailing, thanks to the Ora del Garda which often blows in this area. Fishing enthusiasts can find here different fish species, while the western shores are crossed by walking and cycling paths for those who want to enjoy the beauty of the landscape on foot or by bike. The eastern shores, instead, have been left more wild for those seeking absolute tranquility.
Final notes
Lake Cavedine is one of the treasures of the Valley of Lakes, a place rich in history and natural beauty that really deserves to be visited. I recommend taking a walk along its walking trails or taking a kayak to explore the lake from a different perspective. And if you are fishing enthusiasts, here's another good reason to come and discover this little Trentino paradise.
