Cave has a rich and ancient history. It was one of the oldest castles of the Middle Ages in Lazio and was a fiefdom of a noble family called Colonna. The remains of the castle and its walls, which are of considerable importance to the city, can still be admired.
The first inhabitants of Cave were farmers with scattered housing throughout the territory. The territory of Cave was called 'Territorium Trebanense' in the Middle Ages, as reported by Memorie Cavesi, the first history of the city written in 1941 by Monsignor Nazzareno Marianecci. Here in the Middle Ages, there existed a castle called 'Castrum Trebanum' towards the district of Campo-Cannetaccia. The ancient territory was situated in the locality of Cruci, where the territory of Cave borders those of Valmontone and Genazzano.
In the tenth century, a new residential community was created about a mile from 'Castrum Trebanum' towards Preneste, where the pozzolana and tuff quarries had been opened. From 'Cavarum Terra' derives the current etymology "Cave" (Italy). This community later led to the abandonment of 'Castrum Trebanum', leaving it in complete ruin.
During the war between Charles V of Habsburg and Francis I of Valois, the Colonna chose to support the imperialists, while Pope Clement VII sided with the French. In December 1526, Clement VII ordered the arming of an army that razed fourteen Lazio fiefs of the Colonna, including Marino, Zagarolo, Gallicano nel Lazio, Artena, Subiaco, and Cave.
