The history of Cavazzo Carnico

Cavazzo Carnico has a long history. During World War I, the municipality was the seat of some Italian air squadrons. During World War II, it was occupied by the Cossacks, who called it Krasnodar. After the conflict, Cavazzo Carnico returned to Italy. In 1976, an earthquake struck the town, which was decorated with the Gold Medal for Civil Merit for the courage and solidarity shown by its people.

The symbols of the municipality

The coat of arms and the flag of the Municipality of Cavazzo Carnico were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on May 2, 1963. The flag is red.

Monuments and places of interest

In Cavazzo Carnico, you will find many interesting religious and civil architectures. The most famous church is the Pieve di Cesclans, dating back to the 8th-9th century. Damaged by the earthquake of 1976, it underwent an intense restoration. The Church of San Daniele, in Cavazzo Carnico, instead, preserves beautiful Venetian furnishings, such as the seventeenth-century altarpiece created by D. Tintoretto and F. Bassano. Furthermore, the frescoes on the ceiling of the nave represent the Resurrection of Christ, Madonna and Child, and Saints Anthony and Rocco, Abacuc led by the angel brings food to Daniel in the lions' den, executed in 1798 by C. Boldi di Tarcento. Finally, the Church of San Rocco, dating back to the sixteenth century, houses a main wooden altar attributed to Gerolamo Comuzzo.

A place of fortress

Finally, you cannot miss the Fortezza del Monte Festa. Located on a spur at an altitude of 1050 meters, the fortress was built in 1910 to defend the eastern borders from enemy invasion. Today, the fortress represents one of the most suggestive places in Cavazzo Carnico.
