Cavasso Nuovo

A Friulian Municipality with Ancient Origins and a Unique Name

Cavasso Nuovo is a small Friulian municipality with a long history. Originally, the town was part of Fanna and together they formed the municipality of Fanna di Sopra, with administrative headquarters in Fanna di Sotto. It was only in 1873 that Cavasso gained administrative autonomy and officially separated from Fanna. From that moment on, the town took on its current name, "Cjavàs" in Friulian, to which the denomination "Nuovo" was added with the unification of Italy.

Devastated by the 1976 Earthquake

The history of Cavasso Nuovo has not been without adversity. In 1976, the town was struck by the Friuli earthquake, which caused many collapses and damages. The municipality had to reconstruct many of its buildings and public facilities, although many of the marks still visible in the stone of the homes and churches of the town serve as a reminder of the seismic event.
