The specification "del Tomba" was added in memory of the battles that took place around Mount Tomba during World War I, through a royal decree of July 2, 1922.
History of Cavaso del Tomba
The oldest mention of Cavaso dates back to 780, when a cleric named Felice donated lands near Virago to his daughter. During the medieval period, the village was a "University" consisting of eight rural municipalities, which gravitated around the city of Treviso and was influenced by the Collalto family.
Later, during the Republic of Venice, the village had great economic prosperity thanks to the wool industry. Even during the War of the League of Cambrai, Cavaso escaped being involved due to its secluded position from the battlefields, although it suffered greatly due to the Santa Costanza earthquake in 1695.
During the Napoleonic period, the village was oscillating between French and Austrian administration, undergoing wars and taxation that heavily affected the economy. In the following years, Cavaso was marginal to historical events, although it was directly involved in World War I, where it was semi-destroyed and had to be evacuated.
