The origin of the name Cavallirio
The name Cavallirio has an uncertain origin, but the most accredited theory is that it derives from the late medieval Latin "caballi-rivus", which means "horse stream". This name could be attributable to the presence, in the past, of a changing station near a stream. As with any uncertain origin, there are other hypotheses, but this one seems to be the most plausible.
The history of Cavallirio
The town has a long history that dates back to the medieval era. In 1028, the Municipality of Pombia granted the town to Pietro, bishop of the diocese of Novara. In 1402, it became a fief of Francesco Barbavara and then passed to the Guarco family. In 1471, the town was given to the Marquis of Romagnano. Only in 1536 did Cavallirio become an autonomous municipality and in 1583 it became a parish.
The history of Cavallirio was marked by several wars. In 1655, it suffered the looting of the Savoyard soldiers, while in 1658 it was attacked by soldiers in the service of the Duchy of Modena. In 1733, the town came under Spanish rule. In 1734, due to the Polish Succession War, the County of Novara came under the control of the House of Savoy, until it was liberated in 1814.

The Mill of the Sanctuary
The Mill of the Sanctuary is an ancient water mill dating back to the 16th century. It is not operational, but it is possible to visit the building and admire the mill wheel and the ancient millstones.
