Welcome to Cavallino-Treporti
Hello everyone! Today I'm talking about Cavallino-Treporti, a beautiful municipality in Veneto located in the metropolitan city of Venice. With its 13,299 inhabitants, this area was part of the municipality of Venice until 1999. Curious to learn more? Then keep reading!
Physical geography
The territory of Cavallino-Treporti is a coastal peninsula located between the northern Venice Lagoon and the Adriatic Sea. The northeast area is delimited by the Sile River, which separates this area from the municipal territory of Jesolo.
An interesting feature of the territory is represented by the presence of the Pordelio canal, which divides the peninsula from the lagoon and branches out to the west into two navigable canals, the Portosecco and the Saccagnana. The Pordelio ends near the Sile River, to which it is connected through the Casson canal. The latter is regulated by a lock that controls the confluence of the canal into the river.
But the most interesting feature of the Cavallino-Treporti territory is the increase in land area that took place starting from 1888. In that year, the offshore dam was built, which allowed the advancement of the land surface up to the final beacon of the dam. The land surface has doubled compared to the original one, and today the new coastal land is used for campsites, while the interior territory maintains its agricultural vocation.
Origins of the name
But where does the name of this municipality come from? The name Cavallino refers to the homonymous fraction, but it seems to have ancient origins and derive from the ancient Jesolo, called "Equilium" in Latin. The etymology of the term seems to be linked to the meaning of "horse pasture". Treporti, on the other hand, refers to the presence of three canal-ports in the territory.
History
The territory of Cavallino-Treporti has a very ancient history, which developed during the Roman era. In the territory of Lio Piccolo, the mosaics of a villa were found. In the Middle Ages, the area was characterized by the presence of important centers such as Torcello, Ammiana and Costanziaco, but the changing environmental conditions and the rise of Venice led to their decline in the following centuries. The area became swampy and malaria-infested, until it was recovered thanks to the reclamation works that led to the foundation of the present-day settlements.
Conclusion
In short, Cavallino-Treporti is a fascinating place full of history, immersed in nature and with a unique feature of its kind. If you have the opportunity to visit this area, you won't regret it! I hope this short guide has been useful to you. Until next time!
