Cavallino-Treporti is a municipality located in the province of Venice in Veneto, with a population of 13,299 inhabitants. The territory of the municipality is a peninsula facing the Venice Lagoon to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the south, separated from the city of Jesolo to the northeast by the river Sile. Despite its name coming from two of the localities within the municipal territory, the capital of the municipality is Ca' Savio.
Physical Geography of Cavallino-Treporti
One of the peculiarities of the territory of Cavallino-Treporti is its formation as a coastal peninsula, divided from the lagoon by the Pordelio channel. This channel branches off into two other navigable canals, Portosecco and Saccagnana. The surface area of the peninsula has approximately doubled through the construction of a breakwater in 1888, which stopped the sand allowing the advancement of the land and creating a triangular stretch of new coastal territory where several campsites are located.
Origin of the Name
The name of the municipality derives from the toponym of the two hamlets of Cavallino and Treporti, which are part of its territory. The name Cavallino seems to originate from the word Equilium, an ancient name for Jesolo, meaning "horse pasture" or similar. Treporti, on the other hand, refers to the former presence of three canal ports that still exist in the hydrographic structure of the peninsula.
History of Cavallino-Treporti
The area where Cavallino-Treporti is located developed significantly during the Roman and medieval periods, with the presence of important centers such as Torcello, Ammiana, and Costanziaco. However, due to environmental changes and the rise of Venice, these centers fell into decline, and the area became marshy and swampy. Only later, through land reclamation, were the current settlements founded.
