Cavallermaggiore
Welcome to Cavallermaggiore
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about my city, Cavallermaggiore, a municipality in the Cuneo province of Piedmont. With a population of about 5,400 inhabitants, it is a quiet and welcoming city, located on the right bank of the Maira stream.
The history of Cavallermaggiore
The name of the city may derive from the presence of draught horse breeding, as the Latins called it "caballus". In Cavallermaggiore, Ascanio Sobrero, the inventor of nitroglycerin, spent many years of his life. The city has dedicated a street to him and his family tomb is located here.
Monuments and places of interest
Cavallermaggiore boasts numerous churches and sacred sites of architectural interest. The Church of Saints Michael and Peter is the parish church, while the Church of San Lorenzo is famous for its medieval bell tower. The city also has a chapel dedicated to Saint Vito and a church dedicated to Saint Teresa. Finally, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Grace, the former Augustinian convent, is one of the most famous sacred places in the city.
Society
Cavallermaggiore is a multicultural city, with an increasingly diverse population. According to the National Institute of Statistics, at the end of 2017, 551 foreign citizens were living in Cavallermaggiore, mainly from Romania, India, Morocco, and Albania.
Culture
The city of Cavallermaggiore hosts many festivals and events throughout the year. The Fair of Saint George, which takes place on the weekend before April 23, is a fair dedicated to the patron saint of the city. The Gorgonzola Festival, on the other hand, is a celebration of this cheese, featuring numerous culinary tastings and presentations by manufacturers. The Festival of the town, instead, is celebrated in honor of Our Lady of Grace, the patron saint of Cavallermaggiore, in the last week of August. During this week, the city center becomes an amusement park for the whole week, with a fair along Via Roma, followed by a procession dedicated to the Madonna and, finally, a large fireworks show. The Nativity Scene of Cavallermaggiore, instead, features a series of automatons and statues from the 1700s, while the Palio of the boroughs is a sporting event that takes place over several days, culminating in the final evening. Finally, the Piedmont Exhibition of Publishing promotes books and writers in a large event at the city's communal hall.
In conclusion, Cavallermaggiore is a city full of history, monuments, and sacred places. A vibrant and welcoming city that loves celebrations, festivals, and cultural events. Come and visit us and you will be welcomed with the warm hospitality of northern Italy!
