Cava Manara is the result of the merger of several municipalities, including Torre de' Torti, Gerre Chiozzo and Mezzana Corti, which have left a strong mark on its history.
History of Cava Manara
Cava is a city with ancient history dating back to the 13th century. In the past, it was part of the Pavia territory and was called 'Cava Taverna'. In 1466 the city was granted to the Eustachi family of Pavia, then passed to the marquis Uberto de'Olevano. It was only in 1797, when the feudal system was abolished, that the territory of Cava became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Even though Cava was part of Lomellina, a geographical region of Lombardy, and although it was located on the border with Siccomario, a small but important area located in Oltrepò Pavese, both regions came under the rule of the Savoy in 1707. In 1871, the municipality of Torre de' Torti and Gerre Chiozzo were merged into the town of Cava Manara, and were united in the name of Luciano Manara, a military man who fought in 1849.
Torre de' Torti
Torre de' Torti is a medieval town that was part of the Cava fief. In the 18th century, when Lomellina passed to the Savoy, the area, along with three other small centers, remained without an owner because Austria, which dominated Milan, considered these lands part of Siccomario. The issue was resolved only thanks to English mediation. In 1871, Torre de' Torti was merged into the town of Cava Manara.
Gerre Chiozzo
Gerre Chiozzo, another town that joined Cava, had ancient origins dating back to Roman times. The city expanded in the 14th century and reached its peak during the 15th century, when it became part of the Cava fief. In 1618, the city began to suffer from famine and plague, which reduced it to a small fraction. In 1871, Gerre Chiozzo was merged into the town of Cava Manara, making a strong contribution to its history.
Mezzana Corti
Mezzana Corti, a location near the Po river, had a very tumultuous history due to the proximity of the river. In the 18th century, the river created a large area south of Mezzana, including the area of the current municipality of Bressana Bottarone. Here stood a large village, called Mezzana Corti, including the municipality of Bottarone, which came under the rule of the Cava fief. In 1871, Mezzana Corti was added to Cava Manara and contributed to the creation of the current municipality.
