Vaccarizzo-delfino
Discovering Vaccarizzo: a fraction of Catania
Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Vaccarizzo, a fraction of Catania located in the southern part of the city.
Physical geography
Vaccarizzo-Delfino is located only 14.20 km from the main city of Catania and is positioned 2 meters above sea level. The territory borders to the north with the Primosole Hill, to the west with San Giuseppe la Rena, to the east it is bathed by the Gulf of Catania and borders with the municipalities of Lentini and Carlentini to the east and south.
History
Vaccarizzo was a fiefdom owned by the Bonajuto family and, in 1696, Francesco Bonajuto donated it by will to the friars of the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi all'Immacolata. After Francesco's death, the Bonajuto heirs initiated a legal dispute against the Franciscans to regain possession of Vaccarizzo, which lasted until the 19th century.
Until the early 1900s, the area was characterized by agriculture and the presence of forests, but in the 1960s it was affected by real estate speculation, with the construction of private houses and seaside resorts in the eastern part.
Monuments and places of interest
In the fractions of Vaccarizzo you can visit the Church of Our Lady of Nazareth oltre Simeto, a Catholic place of worship built in 2013.
Culture and education
In the Codavolpe district there is a primary education school, detached from the Fontanarossa school in Catania.
Economy
The economy of Vaccarizzo is mainly based on tourism, thanks to the presence of seaside resorts and holiday homes. During the summer season, in fact, the fraction can accommodate up to 6,000 people.
Infrastructure and transport
The area is well connected to the public transport of Catania's AMT, and buses from line 538 pass regularly through Vaccarizzo.
