Castione Andevenno

Welcome to Castione Andevenno: a small village nestled in vineyards

Castione Andevenno, also known as Castiùn in the local Valtellinese dialect, is a municipality with a population of 1516 located in the province of Sondrio, Lombardy. The village, situated to the west of Sondrio, is surrounded by vineyards and extends from the valley floor, where the Adda river lies, to the Val Torreggio. The highest peak in the territory is Monte Rolla. The population of the village has always been engaged in agriculture and dairy farming. In order to ensure grazing land for their animals, the inhabitants were obliged to emigrate to the mountains seasonally during the spring and autumn, while winters were spent in the village.

The history of Castione Andevenno

The village developed on the right bank of the Bocco stream, starting from the district of Andevenno, mentioned in the "Codice diplomatico longobardo" from 992 AD and in some notarial deeds from the 11th century. During the war between Como and Milan, many inhabitants of the Como district sought refuge in Valtellina. Among them, the Paravicini and Capitanei families settled in the area, already owners of Sondrio, Ardenno and Valmalenco. The Capitanei family had the Castiglione fortress built and fortified on a hill near Andevenno, which gave the village its name. Today, the remains of Castiglione are visible near the former church of San Rocco.
