Castiglione Messer Marino

Welcome to Castiglione Messer Marino

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk to you about Castiglione Messer Marino, a small town of 1533 inhabitants located in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. With its mountainous terrain at 1000 meters above sea level, Castiglione is a point of reference for the economy and culture of the Vastese region.

Let's discover its physical geography

The territory of Castiglione is characterized by an unusual morphology due to the geo-chemical nature of the soil, which is not suitable for agriculture, and the ancient struggle of local farmers and breeders. The extensive areas devoid of vegetation are crossed by ancient "tratturi", in memory of transhumance from Puglia, and beech forests invigorated by oaks and turkey oaks. Mount Castelfraiano, which reaches 1415 meters, represents the highest peak of the municipality. The most important watercourses are the Treste and the Sinello, while Lake la Croce represents a basin in the shape of 8, largely covered by reeds and in the process of being filled in.

Castiglione Messer Marino: nature, history and scenic beauty.

The climate

The climate in Castiglione is typically mountainous, with cold winters, cool and rainy springs and autumns, and sunny but cool summers.

The history

The history of Castiglione dates back to 1027, when the belonging of the abbeys of Santa Maria della Noce and San Salvatore to the fief of Count Manieri di Trivento was mentioned. In the twelfth century Castiglione appears in a book by Roger II as "Quatllun", twenty-four miles from Fallo and fifteen from Agnone, but there are few testimonies of the settlement. From documents dating back to the 1200s, the locality was called Castellone, meaning large castle.

Curiosities about the municipality

Castiglione suffered serious damage due to the Maiella earthquake of 1706 and in 1901 was seriously damaged by a landslide. Despite having neighborhoods in areas at risk of hydrogeological hazards, no mitigation and prevention actions have been taken.

Conclusions

What do you think of this little pearl of Abruzzo? If you love nature and history, I recommend visiting Castiglione Messer Marino and discovering its scenic and historical beauties in person. You won't regret it!
