Pozzuolo

Pozzuolo: an ancient Umbrian village full of charm

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Pozzuolo, an ancient Umbrian village that has so much to offer. Located 8 km from Castiglione del Lago and 18 km from Montepulciano, this hamlet of the municipality of Castiglione del Lago has a history dating back to the High Middle Ages. Inhabited by about 1000 people, Pozzuolo is a fascinating location, rich in history and traditions.

The history of Pozzuolo

The history of Pozzuolo dates back to the tenth century, although there are reports of Etruscan burial sites in the vicinity. The name "Pozzuolo" seems to derive from the watering station present on the Pozzolese road, a pilgrimage route that connects Montepulciano to the Basilica of Santa Margherita in Cortona. In Laviano, a nearby location to Pozzuolo, is the birthplace of Santa Margherita da Cortona.

Laviano: a gem to discover

Laviano is a location that is part of the Pozzuolo area and is located on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. In the fourteenth century, the fiefdom of Laviano was granted to the Degli Oddi di Perugia family, who held it until the fifteenth century, when it was sold to the Baglioni family. In 1836, Princess Maria Alessandrina Bonaparte, daughter of Luciano Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, married Vincenzo Valentini, administrator of Canino. The couple retired to Laviano after the fall of the second Roman Republic (1849) and remained there until their death. Legend has it that Maria Alessandrina took inspiration from the birthplace of Santa Margherita da Cortona to write her poem "Margherita da Loviano".

Other places not to be missed

In addition to Pozzuolo and Laviano, there are other locations in the surrounding area that are worth discovering. Cozzano, with its 313 meters above sea level and 16 inhabitants, is a small hamlet that will allow you to enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the Val di Chiana. Nardelli, situated at 330 meters above sea level, has about 50 inhabitants and is another location worth visiting. Finally, Laviano, with its 332 meters above sea level and 24 inhabitants, attracts attention for its ancient charm and privileged position on the Colli del Trasimeno.

Conclusion

Pozzuolo is a charming village that I recommend you visit if you have some free time. Its fascinating history and natural beauty will leave you speechless. And if you are passionate about art and culture, you can also visit museums and churches in the surrounding area. Come and discover Pozzuolo and tell us what you think!
