Castiglione Chiavarese: a village immersed in nature

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk to you about Castiglione Chiavarese, a Ligurian municipality with about 1558 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Genoa. Its name in the Ligurian language is ''O Castiggion''. This village has a very varied territory, ranging from 120 m to 1,094 m above sea level, and is characterized by the presence of numerous streams that run through it. The main one is the Petronio stream, which has given rise to unique natural landscapes.

The hills around are covered with holm oaks, chestnuts, pine forests, and fir groves, while among the most interesting places from a naturalistic point of view we find the Frascarese caves and the archaeological-mining site of Monte Loreto. But that's not all, because the peaks of the territory - such as Mount Alpe, Mount Groppi, and Mount Taversa - allow for suggestive excursions and breathtaking views.

A history that dates back to the Roman Empire

Castiglione Chiavarese, as history reminds us, is a place that has played an important role since ancient times. It was actually inhabited by the Romans, as evidenced by the numerous remains of bridges, objects, and lime quarries present in the territory. In particular, the fraction of Velva - which is part of the municipal territory - was even a Roman municipality located on the Via Sara.

In the Lombard era, in the 7th century, Liguria was conquered by King Rotari. Then, with Charlemagne and the imperial diploma of June 5, 774, the territory of Castiglione Chiavarese and the port of Moneglia were donated to the monks of the abbey of San Colombano.

Later, the village passed into the hands of the Fieschi family, who sold it to the Republic of Genoa in 1276. For a long time, Castiglione Chiavarese was subjected to the podesteria of Sestri Levante, belonging to the Chiavari captaincy. Only later was the territory of Castiglione elevated to the rank of autonomous podesteria, always within the greater Chiavari jurisdiction, including the current municipality of Maissana.

In 1747 the Republic of Genoa built a series of fortifications to protect the territory from any Austrian attacks. With the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Castiglione Chiavarese returned from December 2, 1797, in the Entella department, with Chiavari as its capital, within the Ligurian Republic.

Castiglione Chiavarese: between Ligurian nature and history.

From the Congress of Vienna to the present day

In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, Castiglione Chiavarese became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) in the province of Chiavari under the division of Genoa. Over the decades, the village has undergone the impact of the wars and the social and economic transformations of the country, but it has always remained faithful to its traditions and identity.

Today Castiglione Chiavarese is a lively and active place, offering numerous opportunities for its inhabitants and visitors. The presence of green spaces, natural parks, and hiking trails allow spending moments of relaxation and leisure in the open air. Moreover, the village has recently been enhanced from an architectural point of view, allowing the appreciation of its numerous historical and artistic monuments.
