History of Castiglion Fibocchi

The town of Castiglion Fibocchi has an ancient and interesting history. It is located on the last foothills of the Pratomagno massif, along the ancient Via Clodia, and was already inhabited during the late republican age. In 1385 it was conquered by the Florentines and became part of their territory. Along the current Setteponti road you can still admire the beautiful Leopoldine Houses, examples of the typical rural architecture of the area. Upstream of the town is the hamlet of Gello Biscardo, with its ancient and fascinating village. On the hill are the ruins of San Quirico, the paleo-Christian church for which there are records dating back to the 2nd century.

The Marchesato of Castiglion Fibocchi

The Marchesato of Castiglion Fibocchi played an important role in the history of the town. Granted by Grand Duke Ferdinando II to General Alessandro del Borro di Girolamo, the winner of the Turks, in 1644, this noble title was maintained by his descendants until 1749, when the law abolishing the grand ducal holdings made it obsolete. The Del Borro family were also lords of the Borro Castle from 1254, from which they took their name, and greatly increased the agricultural production of the fiefdom.

The plebiscite and the "king of Castiglion Fibocchi"

During the plebiscite for the annexation of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Sardinia, Castiglion Fibocchi voted in favor of maintaining a separate kingdom. Due to this result, Grand Duke Ferdinando IV of Tuscany was nicknamed the "king of Castiglion Fibocchi". It is said that this town was the only one where free voting was allowed, but we do not know if this is the true reason behind its choice.

The name of Castiglion Fibocchi

Even the name of Castiglion Fibocchi has an interesting history. It derives from the phrase "Da Bocca or Bocco de' Pazzi di Valdarno", which has nothing to do with the Pazzi family famous for their conspiracy against the Medici. In ancient documents, the name of the town is reported as "Castilium Filiorum Bocchi".
