Origins of the Name
Curious to know the origin of the name Castelvetro Piacentino? Actually, the appropriate name for this village should be Castelvecchio, from ''Castrum vetus'', its original name. However, the name became Castelvetro, a deformation of the original, since ''Castrum vetus'' became vulgarized Latin ''Castellum vetus'' and then abbreviated to ''Castelvetus'', to finally become the current Castelvetro.
A Brief Historical Overview
Castelvetro Piacentino has a very ancient and rooted history. The first traces of a Roman fortress date back to the time of Marcus Brutus, Praetor of the province of Cremona. In the XIII century, the fortress was already reduced to a pile of ruins. The village appears in fact in a Cremonese document dating back to 1055, in which the Carolingian emperor Henry invests in lands to the same canonics of the cathedral of Cremona, including Castelvetro.
The Middle Ages
Castelvetro Piacentino was very important both for the Commune and for the Diocese of Cremona. The Church, in particular, had acquired territories in the area thanks to its faithful vassals Sommi and Bonifaci. The expansion of the Cremonese diocese on that side of the Po was a result of the Church's acquisition of property and the conquests of the Commune. The court of Castelvetro extended over the area of the current capital, excluding the suburb of Croce Santo Spirito. At the time, it was limited to the north by the living branch of the Po known as Pausiolo.
