The History of Castelvetere

The origins of the municipality are still uncertain, but the first mention of Castelvetere dates back to the 12th century and is contained in the Catalogus Baronum. It was part of the county of Civitate during the Norman conquest of Southern Italy, then passed to the Gimondo de Molisio family during the Hohenstaufen domination. In the Angevin period, it was possessed by Simone de Molisio, while with the Aragonese domination it passed to Alberico Carafa. Later on, the feudal lordship of Castelvetere was acquired by Nicola Moscatelli in 1689, who was the marquis of the town until the end of the 18th century. In 1811, the municipality passed to the newly created province of Campobasso and then, in 1861, to the province of Benevento.
