Discovering Telese Terme
Telese Terme is a small town of 7,624 inhabitants located in the center of the Telesina valley, in the province of Benevento, Campania. The town is located on the right bank of the Calore Irpino river and is part of the Agricultural Region No. 4 - Colline del Calore Irpino inferiore. In this area, at the foot of Mount Pugliano, there are sulfuric water springs that supply the thermal establishments of Telese, the main economic activity of the Telesina Valley. In the town's territory, there is also the Lake of Telese, a very popular tourist attraction.
The Nature of Telese Terme
Telese Terme is surrounded by nature, with the Calore Irpino river and the hills of the lower Calore Irpino. The area is rich in water resources, thanks to the thermal springs that supply the thermal establishments of Telese. In particular, the Grassano stream and the Seneta torrent, both born from Mount Pugliano, cross the town of Telese before flowing into the Calore Irpino. The Grassano stream has been transformed into a natural park, where it is possible to walk in contact with nature.
The History of Telese Terme
Telese's origins date back to the Roman era when the area was home to the important city of Telesia. Over the centuries, Telesia underwent numerous vicissitudes, including an earthquake that completely destroyed it in 1349. After the earthquake, the city was abandoned due to the mofete, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide emissions that made the air unbreathable. The bishop of Telesia transferred to Cerreto Sannita, putting an end to the Telesina diocese. However, the village that developed around the Cathedral of Telesia continued to exist and, over the centuries, evolved into the current Telese Terme.
Telese Terme Today
Today, Telese Terme is a very popular tourist destination, thanks to its thermal waters and the beauty of the surrounding area. The town offers many tourist attractions, including the Lake of Telese, where it is possible to take boat rides and practice water sports. The historic center of Telese Terme is very picturesque, with its cobbled streets and old stone houses. The town is also famous for its gastronomy, with typical dishes such as Telese sausage, 'ncavuliere (a soup of vegetables and legumes), and homemade tagliatelle with mushrooms and sausage.
