Castelspina

Welcome to Castelspina: a small community in the heart of Piedmont

Hello everyone, today we will talk about Castelspina, a municipality in the heart of the province of Alessandria, Piedmont. This village has about 412 inhabitants and has a very interesting history.

History of Castelspina

Castelspina was born around 1300 as part of the municipality of Castellazzo Bormida. The parish church, located in the main square of the village, is dedicated to the blessed Virgin Mary and stands on the site of the ancient church of Santa Maria di Gamondio. During the Kingdom of Italy, Castelspina was part of the Mandamento of Sezzadio and the district of Alessandria until its abolition in 1927. In 1884, Mother Chiara Ricci founded the order of the Franciscan Angelic Sisters with the help of Father Innocenzo Gamalero.

The municipality was suppressed during the fascist mergers of 1929 and was merged with the municipality of Sezzadio. Autonomy was regained only in 1954.

Symbols of Castelspina

The coat of arms of the municipality of Castelspina was granted by the decree of the President of the Republic in 2003. The banner is a white cloth with a red border.

Monuments and places of interest

The main nucleus of the village extends around the main square, where the parish church of the Assumption is located. This church, built in 1628, is one of the main architectural monuments of the place. Not far away is also a beautiful oratory.

The building that houses the current town hall was built on the foundations of the ancient castle, an imposing quadrangular structure built by the Malvicini family around 1240. Even today, large sections of the castle's perimeter walls are visible.
