Castelsilano: a small Calabrian town with ancient charm

Castelsilano is a small town in the province of Crotone in Calabria, with a population of approximately 880 people. Its name derives from a legend that tells of a hunting lodge built in 1650 by Scipione Rota, Prince of Cerenzia. However, only in 1950 did the town change its previous name of "Casino di Calabria," eliminating the playful reference to a "brothel."

Physical Geography

The town of Castelsilano spans an area of 10.29 square kilometers and is located in the hilly area of Sila Piccola, between the Tacina and Neto rivers. The territory is characterized by lush valleys, chestnut and olive groves, and numerous water sources.

History

The foundation of the town dates back to 1685 with the name "Castrum Casini," but it was only in 1811 that the municipality of "Casino di Calabria" was created. The town experienced strong emigration to the Americas due to its agricultural vocation.

During the events following the Ustica massacre, the town attracted media attention due to the crash of a Libyan military airplane. In the film "Il muro di gomma" by Marco Risi, a scene is shown taking place in Altofonte, in the province of Palermo, but passed off as Castelsilano.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The historical and artistic heritage of Castelsilano is represented by several monuments and places of interest. Among these are the Casino Castle of the Rota di Cerenzia princes, dating back to the 17th century, and the parish church of San Leonardo, which contains valuable works of art.

Society

The demographic evolution of the town of Castelsilano has been reduced in recent decades due to emigration and population aging.

Economy

Agriculture has long been one of the main sources of income for the town of Castelsilano. In particular, the collection and trade of chestnuts have been an important resource for the local economy. Crafts constitute another significant aspect of the town's economy, particularly weaving and the production of carved furniture.

Castelsilano is a small town with a millenary history that still preserves the ancient charm of a provincial village. Despite emigration and demographic decline, Castelsilano remains a beloved place for its inhabitants and for all those who want to discover the hidden treasures of Calabria.
