Discover the beauty of Castelplanio's physical geography
Castelplanio's physical geography is fascinating and a bit complex. The municipality is located on a hill that extends from north to south, with some hamlets located in the valley. Among the hamlets of Macine, Borgo Loreto, and Pozzetto, several streams converge into the Esino river. The medieval town is the hub of the municipality's life and the Don Minzoni Avenue/Via Gramsci is the heart of the city, following the ridge of the hill.
Piagge, another hamlet of the municipality, is located on another hill further east, and its territory is connected to the valley with some rugged roads. From a geological point of view, the ground of the municipality is mainly formed by Cenozoic sandstone, while the valley has sedimentary ground dating back to the Neozoic era.
Castelplanio's ancient history
Castelplanio boasts an ancient history dating back to the Roman era. In fact, in various areas of the municipality, artifacts of the Roman civilization have been found, such as pottery and remains of a settlement in Borgo Loreto. Moreover, along the Carrozze Vaccili road, the remains of a Roman villa with mosaics can be found. However, the most important discovery is a Roman epigraph located in the town hall, signed by a free citizen of the ancient city of Ostra.
According to legend, the name Castelplanio would derive from the toponym of the ancient city of Planina, located in the territory of the current municipality of Monte Roberto. The inhabitants of this city, in the fifth century, rebuilt their town on the other bank of the Esino river, in an easily defensible area, bringing the name of their city with them.
