The fortified village of the Pisan Republic was founded in the medieval period and, thanks to its position on the borders between the two republics of Pisa and Siena, played an important role in the history of Tuscany. In 1639, Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici elevated the village to a marquisate in favor of the Florentine Luca di Girolamo degli Albizi. With the feudal investiture, the marquis was granted jurisdiction over civil, criminal and mixed cases, together with some fiscal revenues. The feudal lord was also invested with jurisdiction of the first appeal on these cases. The Nine Conservators were responsible for the control and administration of the community's revenues and emoluments over which the marquis could not exercise rights. In 1781, the fiefdom was abandoned by the Albizi family and Castelnuovo was aggregated into the minor Podesteria of Montecastelli.
