Castelnuovo di Ceva
Greetings from Castelnuovo di Ceva!
Hello everyone! Are you ready to discover Castelnuovo di Ceva, a small town in Piedmont surrounded by nature? Let's get ready to start our journey!
Physical geography
Territory
Our town is located in a completely mountainous area, at an altitude of 743 meters above sea level. It is part of seismic zone 3A, but don't worry, earthquakes around here are very rare!
Climate
Our climate is classified as zone F, which means we have a thermal requirement of 3236 degree days. But don't worry, the law does not impose limits on heating systems, so you can stay warm!
Origins of the name
The name Castelnuovo derives from the Latin "Castrum novum" or the late "Castronovo". This refers to the reconstruction of the village and the construction of the castle after its destruction by the Saracens.
History
Our village has ancient origins: settlements probably date back to the 10th century AD. Castelnuovo was part of the Bredulo Committee, as shown by a document from 1033. The original village was probably destroyed by Saracen raids and then rebuilt and equipped with a castle. This made it strategically important, since it was near Liguria.
The Marquisate of Ceva had control of the country until 1228, when Castelnuovo pledged allegiance to the city of Asti. In 1295, the entire marquisate, including Castelnuovo, was sold to the city of Asti. In 1383, it passed from the hands of Gherardo di Ceva to Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti. In 1495 it was taken from Gio Francesco di Ceva and given to Ettore Ajnard, a lieutenant of Ludovico d'Orléans. The latter gave it to Francesco della Rovere, Duke of Sopra. After being enfeoffed to Gio Vincenzo di Ceva in 1530 and to Gemonio di Incisa in 1618, Castelnuovo became part of the possessions of the Savoy family in 1631.
In 1929, Castelnuovo was merged with the municipalities of Montezemolo and Priero, but became an independent municipality again in 1947.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the flag of the Municipality of Castelnuovo di Ceva were granted by the President of the Republic's decree of March 19, 1986.
Monuments and places of interest
In Castelnuovo di Ceva there are several places to visit!
Chapel of San Maurizio: a parish church decorated with frescoes from 1459. Its style recalls Provençal and Jaquerio art. The chapel is located inside the cemetery.
Medieval Tower: the last remaining ruin of the ancient castle destroyed in the 19th century. The tower is surrounded by traces of the walls of the manor of which it was a part.
Parish Church of San Maurizio: built between 1851 and 1855, it houses a wooden statue of the Madonna, the work of the sculptor Antonio Roasio (1809-1886).
Society
Demographic evolution
In 2020, Castelnuovo di Ceva has 97 inhabitants. A small number, but this means that we all know each other!
Administration
Other administrative information
Until 2014, our municipality was part of the Alto Tanaro Cebano Monregalese mountain community. Today there are multiple projects for the territory, from the development of tourism to the enhancement of our typical products.
And with this, we conclude our journey to Castelnuovo di Ceva. Thank you for joining us! We look forward to another tour. Goodbye!
