Castelnuovo del Garda: between lake and hills, history and emotions.

History

The history of Castelnuovo del Garda can be traced back to prehistoric times, thanks to archaeological finds on the municipality's territory. Castelnuovo del Garda, formerly known as "Beneventum," took the name "Quadrivium" - in reference to its geographic position, being located between the four cities of Verona, Mantua, Brescia, and Trento.

Quadrivium was razed to the ground by Barbarossa in the 12th century. This led to the construction of a new fortified settlement, "Castrum novum," which over time became Castelnuovo.

The municipality passed under various domains, from the Signoria degli Scaligeri to that of the Visconti, from the Republic of Venice to the Austrian Empire. From 1867, the municipality became Castelnuovo di Verona, while the current name dates back to 1970, in reference to the strip of territory on the shores of Garda. Castelnuovo del Garda was also the scene of one of the most famous battles of the Risorgimento era.

Tricolore of Oliosi

During the Battle of Custoza, which took place in 1866 during the Third Italian War of Independence, some Italian soldiers defended the Castellano d'Oliosi farmhouse in Oliosi. Their courage was so great that the name of Castelnuovo del Garda went down in history, thanks to an event related to the battle: the tricolor flag of the Italians was divided into thirteen parts and distributed to the Italian soldiers, who didn't care if the flag fell into enemy hands. Today, some of the original pieces are on display to the public.

In conclusion, Castelnuovo del Garda is a municipality full of surprises that will surely make you feel at home. Come and visit us and discover the beauty of this fantastic place!
