Castelnuovo Berardenga

Welcome to Castelnuovo Berardenga: a town in Tuscany

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful town in Tuscany called Castelnuovo Berardenga. This is home to over 8,000 residents and is only 20 km from Siena, on a hill between the Malena stream and the Ombrone river. The region is famous for Chianti wine, of which Castelnuovo Berardenga has been a part since 1932. The territory of the town is divided between the subzone of the Senesi Hills and that of the Chianti Classico, and is considered the southernmost municipality of the Chianti Classico subzone.

Castelnuovo Berardenga: history, geography, and Chianti wine.

Physical geography

Territory

The territory of Castelnuovo Berardenga was once mainly made up of low coast or sea in the Pliocene, followed by a bathyal zone a short distance from the shore. This is evidenced by the finding of numerous fossil teeth of Chlamydoselachus lawleyi, a fossil shark species.

Climate

Castelnuovo Berardenga belongs to the climatic zone D with a high atmospheric diffusivity.

History

The medieval origins

Castelnuovo Berardenga, known as la Berardenga, was once the part of the territory between the sources of the Bozzone stream and those of the Ambra, from the high Chianti to the Biena river to the Taverne d'Arbia. It takes its name from the County of the Berardenghi, which, due to a spelling error, took the name from one of the sons of Count Wuinigi of Ranieri.

Castelnuovo was founded by the Republic of Siena as a point of surveillance of the border towards Florence and Arezzo, and was surrounded by walls. In 1366, the Republic of Siena gave Castelnuovo a community statute, adding to its district several small towns such as Guistrigona, Pacina, Sestano, Ripalta, S. Giusto outside of Castelnuovo, S. Quirico, Curina and many others. Only a tower remains of the castle today.

The ancient Parish of the Saints Giusto and Clemente dates back to before the castle was built and is located nearby. It was remembered long before the construction of the castle, among the branches of the nearby ancient Pieve of Santa Maria a Pàcina.

Conclusions

Castelnuovo Berardenga is a wonderful town. With its ancient history, its geographical location and the fame of Chianti wine, it is a must-see for anyone visiting Tuscany. I am sure that you will be fascinated by its landscape, its history and its wine tradition. I invite you to visit this beautiful city!
