Castelnovetto
Castelnovetto: a village in western Lomellina
Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Castelnovetto, a quiet village with 525 inhabitants located in western Lomellina, in the province of Pavia in Lombardy.
The village lies on the left of the Ladro canal, with a compact plan, and has developed mainly along the road that connects it to the SP 596 Robbio-Mortara.
History
Castelnovetto has a very interesting history. In the 12th century, it was destroyed by the Milanese when it was still called "Castrum", but it was rebuilt and obtained the name "novetum". In 1250, it is mentioned as "Castrum Novetum" in the list of Pavia territories.
In the following century, it was assigned by the Langosco, counts of Lomello, but then it was given in lordship to the Beccaria by Charles IV of Luxembourg in 1355. During the crisis of the Duchy of Milan in 1407, it passed to the Marquis of Monferrato, but soon returned to the Sforza.
In 1454, Castelnovetto was enfeoffed to Cicco Simonetta and from this point onwards it followed the same events as the nearby Valle Lomellina, with a series of short enfeoffments.
The village was sacked in 1643 by Prince Tommaso Francesco of Savoy, but this did not prevent the rule of the Rasini from lasting until the abolition of feudalism in 1797. In 1859, Castelnovetto was included in the province of Pavia.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the flag of Castelnovetto were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on June 11, 1950.
Monuments and places of interest
Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie
An important monument of the village is the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Lombard Gothic building from the 15th century. The façade is divided into three parts by two high pilasters, in the center there is a precious portal inserted in a frame with decorations in terracotta, surmounted by a remarkable now bricked-up rose window. On either side of the two pilasters there are two pointed-arch windows. The roof line is decorated with terracotta arches and hexagonal pinnacles.
The interior of the church consists of three aisles with cross vaults adorned with geometric motifs. In the left aisle there is a beautiful painting of the Madonna with Child and Saints, enclosed in a rich frame and attributed to Giuseppe Giovenone. There is also an artistic statue of the Mater Dolorosa that was said to belong to the Servite Fathers.
Conclusions
