The History of Castelmauro
Castelmauro was founded in the 12th century and, thanks to the construction of a castle in the 13th century, became the property of the Canzano family. Originally named "Castelluccio Acquaborrana," in 1885 it assumed its current name.
Symbols of Castelmauro
The coat of arms of Castelmauro features three towers on a blue field, standing on the plain and each topped by a six-pointed gold star, with the third positioned at the top. The flag is a blue banner.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Among Castelmauro's monuments, the Palace of the Duke stands out. The old castle, now a noble residence, was built in the 13th century and belonged to the Canzano family. The rectangular layout of the palace features bastions and an internal courtyard, with the noble coat of arms above the portal.
The Church of San Leonardo was built in the 12th century, and on the façade, you can admire a Byzantine inscription recalling Bishop Giambattista Lomellino. The interior was remodeled in the 17th century in Baroque style and features a rich wooden pulpit from the 18th century.
Culture and Leisure
In 2008, the Boccardi Astronomical Observatory was inaugurated, entirely financed by the province of Campobasso and named after Giovanni Boccardi, a famous astronomer born in Castelmauro. The observatory is located at an altitude of 1042 m and has a robotic altazimuth mount telescope in Ritchey-Chrétien configuration with a primary mirror diameter of 60 cm.
