History

Castello di Fiemme

The village of Castello di Fiemme is one of the typical ancient Fiemme villages. Testimonies of the current structures under the hill of San Giorgio date back to the 11th century. The archaeological area dating back to the Bronze Age is located east adjacent to the village, which is presumed to be the place of origin of the settlement.

In the 11th century, Castello di Fiemme was part of the areas controlled by the Welf family. In 1026, following the confiscation of the lands of Guelfo II of Altdorf by Emperor Conrad II the Salic, the entire Val di Fiemme came under the control of the Prince-Bishop of Trento. A few years later, part of the Val di Fiemme returned under the management of Guelfo II, with Castello as its administrative center.

In the 12th century, the jurisdiction of Castello was under the control of the Lords of Enn-Caldiff in the service of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino, cadet descendants of the Welf dynasty. In the meantime, the Counts of Eppan and the Counts of Tyrol had major frictions that erupted in a real war. This war ended with the victory of the Counts of Tyrol, who invaded all the castles of the Counts of Eppan and their allies, and razed several, including that of San Valerio, which is now located in the municipality of Cavalese. The castle of San Giorgio, above the settlement of Castello, was instead kept until 1296, when the inhabitants of Castello decided to set the castle on fire.

Ultimately, Castello-Molina di Fiemme is a fantastic place for those seeking a relaxing holiday in nature. There are many things to do and see in this municipality of the Val di Fiemme, both for history lovers and for outdoor activities enthusiasts. Here you will feel at home, and you will definitely come back to discover other hidden treasures within this beautiful mountain community.
