Castello di Cisterna: a municipality in the metropolitan city of Naples

Today I will talk to you about a small municipality in the northeast of Naples called Castello di Cisterna, also known as Castel Cisterna in Italian, Castiello 'e Cisterna and 'A Cisterna in Neapolitan. Despite its small size, this municipality has 7713 inhabitants and is located along the National Road of Puglia between the municipalities of Pomigliano d'Arco and Brusciano, with which it forms a single urban agglomeration.

The territory of Castello di Cisterna extends over a narrow strip of land between the other two municipalities. The area is characterized by the presence of swamps that form after rainfall.

Origins of the name

The name "Castello" could be derived from the fortifications founded by the Samnites, as described by Virgil in Book VII of the Aeneid. Furthermore, the term "Cisterna" could refer to the presence of a cistern used to quench horses in the past.

History

Castello di Cisterna was known simply as "Cisterna" from the twelfth century until 1862. During the thirteenth century, it was a fiefdom belonging to the Mastrilli di Marigliano family.
