Castello d'Agogna

Castello d'Agogna: a small town in the province of Pavia

Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Castello d'Agogna, a small town located in northern Lomellina, a short distance from Mortara, to the left of the Agogna river. With its 1054 inhabitants, this village is a true unknown gem and definitely deserves a visit for those looking for a quiet and pleasant destination.

History of the town

Did you know that Castello d'Agogna belonged to the Abbey of Santa Croce (Mortara) in the Middle Ages? In 1387 it was feudalized to Antonio Porro, count of Pollenzo and lord of Robbio, but then probably returned to the State. In the eighteenth century, however, the Tarsis family had the title of Counts of Castel d'Agogna. In 1713, the town passed under the Casa Savoia together with Lomellina, and in 1859 became part of the province of Pavia.

Symbols of the town

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Castello d'Agogna was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on July 23, 2004. The castle and the undulating band, which symbolize the Agogna stream, evoke the name of the village, while the ears of wheat represent agricultural tradition. The gonfalon, on the other hand, is white.

Monuments and places of interest

The Isimbardi Castle is an ancient fortress from the 12th century that later became a noble residence in the Renaissance, giving rise to the inhabited center. Traces of a drawbridge and arched windows can be seen on the facade of the tower that houses the southeast entrance of the castle. The castle consists of four buildings arranged in such a way as to delimit a square courtyard, with a corner tower located in the western portion of the complex.

Infrastructure and transportation

The Castel d'Agogna Station, inaugurated in 1872, was located along the Castagnole-Asti-Mortara railway and was closed in 2003. Today, to reach the town, one can rely on the Autoguidovie and Baltour Italia bus network.

For sports lovers, know that in Castello d'Agogna there is the Hockey Paolo Bonomi Society, a male field hockey team that represents the town in various tournaments.
