The History of the Province

The first records of the Province of Asti date back to 1620 when it was comprised of 42 municipalities. Throughout the following centuries, the province grew and reduced in size multiple times and underwent various forms of domination, including French and Napoleonic rule. In 1814, it became part of the province of Alessandria again until it was reestablished as an autonomous entity in 1859. After the fascist era, the province was once again reconstituted in its current borders and now has 120 municipalities.
