The Province of Imperia is a beautiful area in Liguria, located in the most western and southern part of the region. With its three regions, Imperia, Sanremo, and Ventimiglia, it is an area rich in history and culture.
Physical geography
The Province of Imperia is bordered to the north by Piedmont, to the east by the province of Savona, to the west by France, and to the south by the Ligurian Sea. The main cities are Imperia, Sanremo, Ventimiglia, and Taggia.
History
The Province of Imperia has a unique history. In 1860, most of the territory was ceded to France under the Treaty of Turin. In 1923, with the merger of the capital Porto Maurizio into the city of Imperia, the province changed its name. In May 1945, France occupied part of the province's territory, but the strong order of US President Harry Truman demanded the withdrawal of French troops beyond Ventimiglia.

The official coat of arms of the Province of Imperia was approved in 1927.
Honors
The Province of Imperia is among the institutions that received the Military Valor Gold Medal for the Italian Civil War. In 1979, it was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor for the sacrifices of its population and its activity in the partisan struggle during World War II.
Society
The province has a population of over 208,000 inhabitants, of which 10.66% are foreigners. The prevailing religion is Catholicism, and the province is divided among the dioceses of Albenga-Imperia and the Diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo.

The Province of Imperia is rich in history and culture. The main art cities in the province are Ventimiglia, Imperia, and Sanremo. Ventimiglia is famous for the Balzi Rossi, a Roman archaeological site, the medieval city, and the Hanbury Botanic Gardens, a symbol of the city. Imperia houses the Basilica of San Maurizio, which is also the largest church in Liguria. Sanremo is famous for its renowned Liberty-style Sanremo Casino and the Russian Orthodox Church.
