Castellana Sicula: a small town in Sicily

Hi everyone! Today I will talk about Castellana Sicula, a small municipality in the metropolitan city of Palermo in Sicily. With its 3115 inhabitants, Castellana Sicula is a peaceful town and ideal for those looking for some relaxation. I will tell you a bit about its history, culture and natural beauty.

Physical geography

Castellana Sicula is located inside the Madonie Park, a mountain range that covers much of central Sicily. Thanks to its location, the town boasts a temperate and pleasant climate: summers are not too hot and winters are not too harsh. If you love nature, you can go hiking or mountain biking in the beautiful surrounding woods.

Castellana Sicula: among mountains and traditions

History

Castellana Sicula is a town of ancient origin: the first urban settlements date back to the first half of the 17th century. The Duke of Ferrandina, feudal lord of the area, obtained the right to settle new villages thanks to his marriage to a noblewoman from the Castellana family, originally from Catalonia. The town then took the name of the consort, in tribute to her family.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite its small size, Castellana Sicula offers several monuments and places of interest. Among the most important are the Church of San Francesco di Paola, the Church of San Giuseppe in Calcarelli and the Church of the Madonna della Catena in Frazzucchi. For those interested in local history, the Museum of peasant civilization and the Muratore Archaeological Area worth a visit. In this area, a prehistoric settlement dating back to the Neolithic period was discovered.

Society

Castellana Sicula is a welcoming and lively community. Every year, in August, the Dance of the Cordella is celebrated, an ancient fertility dance performed by 24 dancers, each holding the head of a ribbon tied to a three-meter-high pole. On the occasion of the Carnival of the Madonie, the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, you can witness a cheerful procession of decorated floats and masks of all kinds.

Infrastructures and transport

Castellana Sicula is crossed by the state road 120 of Etna and Madonie, which connects it to Petralia Sottana and other nearby towns. There are also some bus services that allow you to reach surrounding areas.
