Ogliastro Marina
Discovering Ogliastro Marina: a hamlet of Castellabate
Hello everyone! Today I am talking about Ogliastro Marina, a beautiful geographical hamlet of the municipality of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno. This place is also known as "U' Gliastro" in the Cilento dialect and is an ideal destination for anyone who wants to spend a vacation surrounded by comfort and scenic beauty.
Physical geography
Territory
Ogliastro Marina is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, south of the Gulf of Salerno. Its privileged location makes it easily accessible, but at the same time allows for a unique tranquility. The Torricella hill and the Salvatore cliff overlook the beach, which stretches for kilometers and is shared with the hamlet of Case del Conte, in the municipality of Montecorice. Immersed in the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean maquis, Ogliastro Marina is also famous for the presence of some non-native plant species, including the Carpobrotus, a genus of Aizoaceae. Along the coast, you can admire the Flysch of Cilento, a rare type of stratified rock that has prehistoric origins and slowly degrades into the sea for over five miles. The rocky seabed is a true paradise for marine fauna and flora.
Climate
The climate of Ogliastro Marina is Mediterranean, characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Its location on the Tyrrhenian coast guarantees the passage of a lot of sunny days throughout the year. The average temperatures of the coldest month, January, vary from a minimum of 4°C to a maximum of 12°C, while in July and August they range from 18°C to 29°C. Precipitation is scarce during the summer and at the peak in December, with an average of one day of rain every two.
History
The history of Ogliastro Marina begins in the 10th century, when it was a small village. In 1131, it became a hamlet under the jurisdiction of the Abbot's Castle and from that moment on follows the events of the barony of Castellabate. The marina of Ogliastro hosted a port owned by the Abbey of Cava, which was used for trade with Sicily and North Africa. Ogliastro was renowned for the production of figs and almonds, very widespread in the area since the Renaissance.
Monuments and places of interest
Ogliastro Marina offers many attractions for both tourists and residents. One of the main ones is the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, located near Giovanni Paolo II square and facing the sea. The beaches of Ogliastro Marina are also beautiful, such as the Marina di Casal Velino which is almost 3 kilometers long, or that of the hamlet of Case del Conte, much loved by surfers.
