Alano
Welcome to Alano: a charming hamlet in Cilento
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about a lovely hamlet in the municipality of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno. I'm talking about Alano, a small town of approximately 400 inhabitants that extends along the regional road 267 of Cilento.
Exploring the physical geography of the territory of Alano
The town is immersed in a spectacular landscape, surrounded by the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni National Park. Its territory includes a valley and a plain, called Alano basso, and a hilly area known as Alano alto. The Tresino mountain, the hills of San Pietro, Santa Maria, and Lago, delimit the borders of this small paradise. Alano is located about 3.22 km from the main municipality, 10 km from Agropoli, and around 60 km from Salerno.
Discovering the climate of Alano
Thanks to its geographical location on the Tyrrhenian coast, the climate of Alano is Mediterranean, with hot summers, mild winters, and lots of sunny days. January is the coldest month with temperatures ranging from 4°C to 12°C, while in July and August temperatures range from 18°C to 29°C. The temperate climate is also favored by the protection of the Campanian Apennines, which shelter the area from cold winds in winter. Precipitation, scarce in the summer months, reaches its peak in December, with an average of one day of rain every two days.
A brief look at Alano's past
The history of Alano dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by ancient stone artifacts found in its territory. Later, the town was dependent on the administrators of the Castle of the Abbot. In detail, in the fifties, it was mainly inhabited by farmers who had left the lands of Tresino. In the eighties, however, the town grew considerably, thanks to its proximity to the main municipal road connections (regional road 267 of Cilento) and the tourist hamlets of Santa Maria and Lago.
What to see in Alano
If you decide to visit Alano, you can't miss some of its most precious treasures, such as the Church of Santa Rosa da Lima, located in a charming square, the statue of the Madonna of Lourdes placed on the square bell tower, and the Massabielle Cave (reproduction) which is located in Piazza Santa Rosa da Lima. The hamlet is also famous for its natural trails and botanical routes. The main one is the natural trail of "Lago, Tresino, San Pietro," which crosses the entire territory of Alano for 9.1 km.
A mention of the local dialect
The dialect spoken by the people of Alano is Cilentano, but with some variations and peculiarities. One of these peculiarities is the use of "e" instead of "i" for a series of words and for the definite article "u" instead of "lu."
In short, Alano is the perfect place for a day trip. Now that you know a little more about this small village, I invite you to visit it and discover personally everything it has to offer.
